Abstract

The stellar populations responsible for the UV rising branch observed in elliptical galaxies are discussed. The nuclei of planetary nebulae seem to be the best candidates, due to the presence of a relationship between metalllcity and the level of the UV rising branch, which can be understood on the basis of evolutionary properties of the old population stars. On the other hand, the observed energy distribution can be accounted for by models in which continuing star formation takes place. Since there are several forms of evidence that star formation occurs at least in few cases, it is suggested that the observed UV flux could be due to the combined effect of both the old and the young stars. The relationship between the mass infall rate in galaxies with cooling flows and the (1550-V) color is presented.
