Abstract
The discussion of mass loss mechanisms for cool stars is based upon our understanding of thermally driven stellar winds. First we discuss Parker’s thermally driven solar wind model, and consider the effects of energy addition to the flow in the form of heat and momentum. On the basis of this general discussion we examine a few particular mechanisms to see if they can play a role in driving massive winds from cool giants and supergiants.
