Abstract
Narrow band filter imaging of the HH34 jet system reveals an inhomogeneous excitation structure in HH34, in particular a compact [OIII] -emission region near the apex of the bow shock. About 2′ N of the jet source a counter bow shock was discovered of very similar appearance to HH34. Long-slit spectroscopy with high resolution shows a two velocity component flow in the jet and an inhomogeneous velocity structure in HH34. These phenomena are briefly discussed in terms of interactions of the flow with the surrounding medium and/or thermal instabilities in the cooling regions of a bow shock.
