Abstract
The ESO 2.2m telescope equipped with the B&C CCD spectrograph has been used to search for emission from regions well outside the bright shells of Planetary Nebulae. From the intensity distribution of these halos, the current mass of the envelope as well as the mass loss rate of the Red Giant progenitor of the nucleus can be inferred.
In addition, the present mass loss rate of the central stars can be derived from the P-Cygni profiles of the UV-resonance lines in the IUE spectra of the nuclei. Results from both methods are presented and compared to theoretical predictions.
