Abstract
Faint secondary structures are detected for some planetary nebulae (PN’s) thanks to the Canada-France-Hawaii Telexcope (CFHT) photon-counting camera (PCC) used in the direct imaging mode with narrowband interference filters centred at Hα, Hβ, [NII]6583, [OIII]4363, 5007 and HeII 4686. Small-diameter objects such as IC 351, 2165; NGC 6790, 6881, 6884, 6886, Ml-1, Ml-4, Ml-65, Vy 2–3 were imaged at f/36 focus, whereas more extended nebulae (ø > 10 ″) were observed at f/8: A2, Ml-75, IC 289. Generally, forbidden emission-line images exhibit inhomogeneous structure while the hydrogen distribution is rather smooth, with faint outer emission evidenced. These outer envelopes could result from multiple-shell formation process. Absolute fluxes were estimated for various wavelengths as well as rough estimates of the ionized mass which would correspond to the total mass since, according to Seaton, planetaries with R (n) > 0.1 pc could be optically thin.
