Airborne Measurements to Investigate the Transport and the Chemistry of Polluted Air Leeside of the City of Munich

Environmental Meteorology

Abstract

Aircraft measurements of NO x , NO, O 3, SO 2 were carried out leeside of the city of Munich during weak-wind inversion situations. Such meteorological situations occur in the Munich area mainly during anticyclonic weather or ’Föhn’-situations. In both cases low easterly winds and an inversion layer lead to highly polluted urban plumes with impact on the so called ”Fünf-Seen-Land” west of Munich.

NO x concentrations exceeding 190 ppb and O 3 concentrations exceeding 140 ppb were observed in some cases. The NO/NO x ratio was decreased and the O 3 concentrations were significantly enhanced in the downwind areas.

Massflux estimations showed a total NO x emission in Munich of 2.1 kg/s. Due to the emission situation in Munich it can be assumed that the main emitter groups are the car traffic, domestic heating systems and power plants.

The SO 2 measurements indicate that there are no significant SO 2 sources present in the Munich area. As a result of recent measurements one can conclude, that mainly long-range transport of SO 2 from our eastern neighbouring countries (CSSR, GDR) is responsible for high SO 2 concentrations in the Munich area.

Additional computer simulations over the complex terrain of interest show a strong influence of topography on transport and dispersion.
