Spiral Structure and Galaxy Evolution
The paper reviews the main mechanisms for spiral structure in galaxies with emphasis on normal spirals. The general distribution of the different spiral types are given and new data on spiral parameters are presented. The possible evolutionary effects caused by the spiral structure in galaxies are discussed. It is concluded that the spiral structure is unlikely to affect the global evolution of a galaxy significantly because the typical dynamical time scale is too long. Although the star formation rate may be altered by the pattern other effects are as important.
