Abstract
Rotation is the essential property of spiral galaxies which determines their appearance (spiral structure) and shape (oblateness). Curiously enough, rotation of the spiral galaxies M81 and NGC 4594 was discovered by M. Wolf and V. Slipher as early as 1914, three years before the extragalactic origin of spiral nebulae was recognized.
