Fractals and Multifractals in Physics

  • Chapter
Book cover Disorder and Mixing

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 152))

Abstract

We present a general introduction to the world of fractals. The attention is mainly devoted to stress how fractals do indeed appear in the real world and to find quantitative methods for characterizing their properties. The idea of multifractality is also introduced and it is presented in more details within the framework of the percolation problem.

This chapter is based on the lectures presented by L.P. Kadanoff (section II) and the author (section III) at the School on Disorder and Mixing (Cargèse, june 1987).

  11. A further illustration of the effect of the distribution of voltages in a random resistor network has been presented in Cargèse by B. Kahng (B. Kahng, G.G. Batrouni & S. Redner J.Phys.A 20 L827 (1987)). These authors studied in particular the variation of the maximum in the voltage in a degradated lattice as a function of size and p. Such a maximum should control the “failure” of a random fuse model.
