Abstract
Early research by Samuel and Piper (67, 68) showed that to overcome lime induced Mn deficiency in South Australian grown oats, soil applications of MnSO4 at high rates (84 kg ha-1) were required. This encouraged the Adelaide Chemical and Fertilizer Company to import MnSO4 in 1929 and commence its manufacture in 1934 (G.R.C. Clarke, personal communication). In the ensuing 30 years, the application of superphosphate-Mn mixtures became widespread to soils responsive to Mn.
