Abstract

Pyrolusite, manganese dioxide, was known to the ancients as ‘glassmaker’s soap’ for its property of clarifying iron-containing glass, whence the metal’s name was probably derived, the Greek μανγανζειν meaning to purify (Remy 1956). Pyrolusite, or braunstein, was well known to the Romans and used by potters throughout the Middle Ages for its brown glaze.

Prof. J.P. Quirk, Director of the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, presented an opening address on this theme to the Symposium as the C.S. Piper Memorial Lecture.
