Abstract
Increasingly, office environments are exploiting the potential of new technology, and the technical information gap between designers and users is widening. Comparatively little attention has been given to reducing this gap, and users regularly find themselves confused and frustrated while interacting with computer-based systems which engage in covert exchanges. Typically users do not know what is going on in a system, nor how to obtain information on system processes. Although representations of “state of the system” information, for example through feedback techniques, are crucial in facilitating human-computer interaction, the forms they take are primitive and inadequate for maintaining uninterrupted dialogue.
