Abstract
The aim of this study is to check the consistency and usefulness of four descriptive environmental dimensions: Pleasantness, Arousal, Impact and Control. The dimensions are operationalized by a newly constructed scale, which is used to relate differences in emotional experience to different kinds of environment.
Six environmental patterns in Madrid were selected: two walking places, two commerical places and two squares. Answers to the new scale were obtained from 183 subjects chosen randomly from people walking in each place.
Results are consistent with recent studies about the emotional appraisal in the context of dimensional approaches, and, also, allow the classification of different places in accordance with the scores obtained for each place.
