Boiling on the Shellside of Horizontal Tube Bundles

  • Chapter
Two-Phase Flow Heat Exchangers

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 143))

Abstract

Boiling on the shellside of horizontal tube bundles is widely used in industry. However, the open literature concerning detailed knowledge about local heat transfer and two-phase flow in such tube bundles is sparse. The following review summarizes what the state of knowledge is on prediction of heat transfer coefficients, the critical heat flux condition, and pressure drop in multitube bundles, the use of enhanced heat transfer surfaces in kettle reboilers and modelling of the thermal hydraulics in kettle reboilers. Recommendations are made for some predictive methods and correlations for use in horizontal tube bundles but the lack of research prevents strong recommendations for any predictive method for any of the heat transfer or two-phase flow processes.
