Abstract

The modern strategy of heat exchanger design is a parallel approach to all the pertinent design submodules: a) process specification; b) thermo-hydraulic; c) architectural; d) mechanical/metallurgical; and e) operation, control, and maintenance. Present computer programs deal mainly with the thermo-hydraulic aspects and require careful selection of the input specifications and analysis of the output results. The true optimum design will often be a compromise between the subsets modular optimums and is frequently decided on by judgement of several experts. Guidelines for a proper design process are discussed and illustrated on a typical example.
