Progress in Plant Protoplast Research

Part of the book series: Current Plant Science and Biotechnology in Agriculture ((PSBA,volume 7))

Abstract

Protoplasts are now used as source material for a range of genetic manipulations. Indeed, protoplast fusion has already produced somatic hybrid and cybrid plants, whilst techniques in molecular biology have advanced so rapidly that transgenic plants have now been reported. In addition to stable transformation, there is increased use of protoplasts in transient gene expression studies designed to provide information on promoters, vectors and methods of delivering genetic materials to plant cells.
