Biology, Mental Disorder, Aggression and Violence: What do We Know?

Book cover Biological Contributions to Crime Causation

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASID,volume 40))

Abstract

The etiology of the aggressive and violent behaviors of persons suffering from mental disorders is poorly understood. While some authors propose that these behaviors result from psychopathology (Craig, 1982; Krakowski, Volavka & Brizer, 1986; Menuck, 1985), others (Monahan & Steadman, 1983) suggest that the determinants of aggression and violence in the mentally disordered are the same as for nondisordered persons. As we have noted elsewhere (Hod g ins, in press a), both of these hypotheses may be acurate, each applying to different types of individuals. Unfortunately, few data exist to test either hypothesis.
