Surface treatments for bonded repair of metals

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Engineering Application of Fracture Mechanics ((EAFM,volume 7))

Abstract

Surface preparation of the metal adherend is the keystone upon which the structural adhesive bond is formed. Extensive field service failure analysis experience in the structural adhesive bonding of both aluminum and titanium alloys has repeatedly demonstrated that bond durability and longevity are dependent upon the stability and bondability of the adherend surface [1, 2]. Combinations of heat moisture and stress have been shown to be particularly effective in sorting out or discrimination between various surface preparations used in the prebond conditioning or treatment of both aluminum and titanium alloys.
