Abstract
William Ruddick thinks that as a utilitarian I am too good to serve on my review committee, while Jeffrey Reiman thinks that I am not good enough. Since my experience leads me to conclude that Ruddick’s pessimism about the operations of such committees is as unwarranted as Reiman’s optimism, I judge the contest between them a standoff.
