Abstract
Canada has originated only a few standards. Neither provincial nor federal authorities have the resources to develop a full range of standards, either for environmental or for occupational contaminants. Canadian regulators usually adopt standards developed elsewhere, or rely upon the existence of such standards as an alternative to regulation and for workers’ compensation awards. In this, Canada is typical of all countries. Pressing for an answer about the origin of most of their standards, we discovered a little known organization called the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH).
