Abstract

The concept of the grading of malignant tumors was introduced by Broders in 1920 (1), who had studied 537 squamous cell carcinomas of the lip. Such tumors tended 1to be much more advanced at the time of his study, which was before 1920, than they are currently. Broders’ study was actually the practical application of the Hansemann principle (2). Hansemann concluded, in the nineteenth century, that the most malignant tumors of various types metastasized the earliest and the most widely. Broders graded the tumors from 1 to 4 and showed that the grade 4 lesions, the most undifferentiated, had the poorest prognosis.
