Abstract
The investor in real estate is not restricted to either active or passive holding of physical property. As an alternative, financial assets backed by real estate can be held. The investor holds claims against the physical property by purchasing or selling securities secured by real estate. Mortgage securities are for real estate paper, or financial assets, as opposed to bricks, mortar, and land.
