Abstract

Many of the advances in our knowledge about liver disease have followed the wider use of liver biopsy and development of new techniques such as ultrasonography and computed tomography. Nevertheless, blood tests remain the first investigations in the assessment of liver dysfunction. None of the tests is entirely specific, and interpretation usually depends on examination of a constellation of results together with the clinical presentation. There is no true ‘liver function test’.
