Abstract

Dermatologists not using computers are a dying breed. Every dermatologist in training that I know uses a word processor and many use their computer for other tasks. However, the impact that computer science has had on the dermatologist of the 1980s is minimal compared with the potential for change in the 1990s. The purpose of this chapter is to review some of the computer applications in dermatology that are already of practical importance and some that are of considerable potential interest. Word processing and the use of keeping a diagnostic index are discussed initially. The more exciting ability to access major databases is mentioned before a more detailed review of the controversial subject of computer diagnosis in dermatology. The important potential for computers in teaching and research is then stressed.
