Abstract
Ever since the elaboration of the theory of Government and Binding (Chomsky 1981, 1982) within the parametric conception of Universal Grammar, one of the most debated topics in syntactic theory has been the appropriate definition of the set of properties which together constitute the NULL SUBJECT PARAMETER. In this context, the present paper sets out to analyze two Italian dialects — Trentino and Fiorentino — both of which exhibit peculiar syntactic patterns which shed new light on the main questions that arise with respect to the proper characterization of the Null Subject Parameter.
We would like to thank two anonymous reviewers for their useful comments, and in particular we would like to thank Ken Safir for the great deal of attention he devoted to our paper.
