Abstract

Japan has played a leading role in the study of liver cancer in the world, perhaps because of her historical background. The terms ‘hepatoma’ and ‘cholangioma’ that had been commonly used worldwide until recently, were coined by Prof. Yamagiwa in 1911 (28), who also pioneered in experimental carcinogenesis by producing carcinoma on the ear of a rabbit after repeated application of coal tar. In 1932, Prof. Yoshida for the first time succeeded in producing liver carcinoma with o-aminoazotoluene (22). In 1965, the Liver Cancer Society of Japan which now has a membership of about 800. One of the major purposes of this society has been the analysis and clinical follow-up of liver cancer patients, particularly after surgery, and surgical cases have usually been analyzed every three years. In 1978, a total of 4,031 cases of primary liver cancer during Jan. 1, 1965-Dec. 31, 1977 were compiled by this society (Survey IV) (9). In survey V undertaken in 1980, 2,396 cases seen during 1978 and 1979 were compiled.
