Abstract

The interrelationship between neoplastic disease and the body’s endocrine and metabolic function is profound and complex. Most physicians are aware of classically described associations between certain tumor types and clinical manifestations of hormone excess. These syndromes, however, represent only the most extreme examples of the far-reaching effects of various malignancies on normal endocrine and metabolic function. Although some manifestations can be attributed to humoral products of the tumors themselves, others result from physiologic responses to the stress associated with severe illness or from therapies aimed at the primary neoplastic disease. This discussion will provide an overview of endocrine manifestations frequently encountered in patients with tumors that do not arise primarily from endocrine glands. At this point, it is not possible to correlate these alterations in endocrine and metabolic function with a defined extent of malignant disease although this certainly represents an area deserving further study.
