Abstract

Barry Eichengreen’s contribution is admirable for the breadth of its coverage, given its compact size. Exploiting the evidence in 17 charts and 11 tables, Eichengreen touches on a number of macroeconomic themes related to the U.S. trade deficit. Annual data for the nominal trade deficit and GNP in nominal and real values are the empirical underpinning of his chapter.
