Abstract

Philosophy is an awkward discipline, set among departments of humanities like some kangaroo among the cattle, like some odd and ugly double-headed duckling. The awkwardness does not result entirely from social contrivance; it is a real and essential consequence of how well the philosophical tradition has met the demands that philosophical questions impose.
