Patrick Suppes contends that philosophers “are no longer Sunday’s preachers for Monday’s scientific workers”. Yet, precisely because of the diversity and complexity Suppes rightly recognized in scientific disciplines, there is a need for sermonizing about science which might be less urgent in times of greater simplicity. To say this is not to say that such exhortation is peculiarly suited to philosophers. The problems calling for preaching and advocacy are not the province of any particular profession or discipline. Yet, one can at least hope that a sensibility to the predicaments which make it desirable to reflect on the direction that scientific inquiry not merely will be but ought to take will be fostered in a climate of interdisciplinary cooperation spiced with familiarity with important philosophical traditions.
