Abstract
Microbial factors, responsible for potato tuber yield reductions in high frequency potato cropping at the experimental farm ‘De Schreef’ in a Dutch polder, were investigated. Besides Streptomyces spp. and Verticillium dahliae, another bacterial factor seemed to be involved. The mechanisms by which this bacterial factor limits potato root growth and tuber yield and the mechanisms of its counteraction by the plant growthpromoting Pseudomonas putida strain WCS358 were analyzed. Based on experimental data, we hypothesize that part of the potato rhizosphere Pseudomonas populations produces more cyanide in short rotations of potato (at ‘De Schreef’) than in long rotations of potato; the cyanide permeates the roots and negatively influences the root energy metabolism.
