Abstract
The Loess Plateau within the Yellow River basin is bounded on the north by Yinshen Mountain and on the south by Qinling Mountain; it stretches to the west of Riyue Mountain and east of Taihang Mountain. Land overlain by loess covers an area of 598,000 square km. populated by nearly 72.7 million people. The administrative divisions within this basin are seven provinces, 46 prefectures and 306 counties. The area subject to severe soil and water losses is 430,000 sq.km, and modulus of the mean annual sediment load reaches 3,700 t/sq.km.
