Abstract
The Loess Plateau in the Middle Yellow basin is located within 34°N4—41°N and 102°E—114°E. It covers an area of about 31.9 × 10 sq. km, has a precipitation varying from 300 to 700 mm, and an average temperature of 3.6–14 C. This plateau is covered by Quaternary loess with the depth ranging from 100 to 200 m. The relief of the plateau varies from 150 to 300 m. Gully density from 3 to 6 km/sq.km, and the slope is greater than 15 degrees. At present, its population density is about 50 to 200 persons/sq.km in most parts, the vegetation cover is less than 20%, and the cultivation indices 40–60%. Consequently, soil erosion is very severe in this area.
