Abstract
The wide range of scale involved in hydrological modelling is emphasised. The known analytical solutions for the problem of soil-controlled ponded infiltration corresponding to different assumptions on soil moisture characteristics are listed and the predicted times to ponding for a typical silt loam are compared. These are found to be remarkably similar inspite of the widely different shapes of profile appropriate to the different functional assumptions for the variation of soil moisture characteristics with moisture content. Empirical relationships for the dependance of actual evaporation on long term average precipation and potential evaporation are compared on a dimensionless basis and found to be similar in shape but to differ widely in their sensitivity to climate change under arid conditions. Brief reference is made to the stochastic-dynamic approach in macro-hydrology. Finally some suggestions are made in relation to future research.
