The Spectral Manifestation of Weakly Coupled Mixed States of Excitons and Lattice Deformation

  • Chapter
Progress in Electron Properties of Solids

Abstract

The secondary emission spectra (SES) were measured as functions of λ ex and T, together with the excitation spectra (ES) of exciton bands in HgI 2 and PbI 2 semiconductors specified by the intermediate exciton-phonon coupling. In the low-temperature SES (T<50K) a two series structure of bands is discovered. Apart from the A-series of bands of polariton origin, we observed another series (B) of bands shifted with respect to the A-series by 7meV in HgI 2 and 2÷3 meV in PbI 2. The B-series arises at a later stage of polariton relaxation and is due to specific states of excitons weakly bound with lattice deformation. Pertinent theoretical models are reviewed. Some features which have been revealed in the low temperature spectra of transmission, reflection and emission of anthracene crystals are also attributed to existence of the bound exciton polaritons with elastic lattice deformation.
