Abstract

This paper reviews and comments on the major developments in the area of optical properties of semiconductors. The focus is on the interpretation of structure in optical spectra in terms of inter-band transitions. Franco Bassani contributed pioneering papers in this important field which, in turn, had a large influence on our present understanding of the electronic structure of semiconductors and of solids in general.
