Abstract
This is a selective review of the major themes in southern African research on rivers during this century. It is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather to describe the progression towards an understanding of the ecology of our rivers. It includes an examination of some of the latest research, which is examining the application of concepts of riverine ecosystem functioning developed in America.
