Abstract

Random wave physical models of harbours have been employed at Hydraulics Research (HR) since the early seventies. The change from using single period waves of uniform height to wave where heights vary within groups and energy is spread over a number of periods, led to a profound reassessment of the way harbours and moored vessels respond to waves: responses occurred at wave group periods as well as at wave periods; the conventional solution of providing shelter for berths by building breakwaters was found to be ineffective in sheltering from long period disturbances with wavelengths of kilometres which arose naturally due to wave grouping; downtime at berths due to excessive vessel movement was no longer just related to the wave height at the berth and it became essential to use models of moored ships to evaluate berth tenability.
