Abstract

A brief description is given of work in progress on the modelling of the interaction between a surface current and the background surface wave field. The emphasis initially was on surface currents induced by internal waves but the techniques involved are sufficiently general for them to apply to any current which can be represented satisfactorily by piecewise linear segmentation over the straining region. Thus tidal flows over bathymetric features such as ridges and gulleys can be accommodated. The modelling is currently being extended to apply to shearing currents for comparison with observations of fronts and eddies.
