Abstract

On May 25, 1987, the cover page of Time bore the title “What Ever Happened to Ethics”. The topic is timely, indeed; a good portion of the issue was devoted to it in an effort to survey a pressing social problem that has in recent times moved ever more forcefully into the foreground of public consciousness. The lead article bewails the current state of affairs by stating that “large sections of the nation’s ethical roofing have been sagging badly, from the White House to churches, schools, industries, medical centers, law firms and stock brokerages — pressing down on the institutions and enterprises that make up the body and blood of America” (p. 26).
