Inverse Problems: A Tutorial Survey

  • Chapter
Underwater Acoustic Data Processing

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 161))

Abstract

The tutorial starts with some examples of inverse problems. The scope is then limited to data degraded by linear operators and noise. The two most serious problems in inversion are discussed: ill posedness due to noise and near-singularity of the operator, and the null space problem due to the operator’s singularity. A survey is presented of methods and attempts to alleviate these problems by the incorporation of a priori knowledge of the object function.
