Abstract
In this chapter and the next we provide the necessary background for the reader who is completely unversed in the subject of lattice-ordered groups. We begin with the definition and some examples and then provide the requisite elementary properties (those that concern elements). The last section of the chapter includes results which will not be needed later but which might be of interest to people outside the subject and that are of a sufficiently basic nature.
