Abstract

Schönlein is usually credited with the original description of a characteristic purpuric rash and arthralgia1, and Henoch with the association of a smiliar rash with abdominal symptoms2 and subsequently with renal disease3. However, as early as 1801, Heberden had described repeated attacks of purpuric rashes with painful swelling, abdominal discomfort and haematuria4.
