Abstract

Although the death rate from gastric cancer is decreasing in Japan, it is still the primary cause of death due to malignancy. Even in 1986 the death rate was 39.9 per 100 000 of the population, which is 1.6 times higher than that from the second most common cause, lung cancer (24.4). Improvement of early detection techniques, distribution of mass screening techniques and developments in treatment are the most important and urgent social demands in Japan [1]. In such circumstance, the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer (JRSGC) was established in 1962, and almost one thousand specialists joined it, not only clinicians but also basic researchers from 69 leading institutions all over Japan.
