Abstract

The controls of the (state) condition of concrete and rebars are carried out by using nondestructive methods. A set of methodologies and facilities has been developed for determining the damaged areas to be repaired in a bridge.

  • Measuring the surface concrete permeability: the principle is to check the pressure in a jar, previously fixed on the concrete surface and in which vacuum has been created. The pressure increase is due to the air flux through the concrete pores.

  • Measuring the carbonation depth: the pH (colour) indicator is applied at the bottom of a small slot, correctly sawn, in the concrete.

  • Measuring the half-cell potential of rebars at points which are close to one another for determining the areas where rebars are most probably corroded.
