Abstract

Some examples of our recent research will be presented to illustrate how NMR and X-ray structure determination techniques can act as an essential second pair of “eyes” for the organometallic chemist. Information gathered from both techniques can be translated into a molecular model containing the interaction between the metal(s) and surrounding organic ligands. The structure in the solid state gives a static impression of a molecule, whereas from NMR data an idea can be obtained about its dynamic behaviour in solution. It is the latter type of information that is often more important to the organometallic chemist as he is also interested in the reactivity of his molecules, e.g., their suitability as homogeneous catalysts. The examples have been chosen from coordination and organometallic chemistry involving the Group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, and Au).
