Abstract
Within the framework of a research line focused on the preparation of new biodegradable polymers, a study has been undertaken on the evaluation of the activity of different bacterial strains in the synthesis of functional polyesters. In the present contribution data are reported on the effect of different carbon sources in the production of poly(β-hydroxyalkanoate)s by a wild type Rhizobium ”hedysari“ strain and three mutants obtained by thermal shock. In all cases high molecular weight poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was produced and the bacterial productivity was very much affected by the culture medium composition. D-Mannitol appeared to be a fundamental ingredient, not only to cell growth, but also to PHB production. The mutants, including the plasmid-free one, were active in the PHB production, that appeared to be chromosomically encoded.
