Recent Developments in Rhizobium Polysaccharides

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 186))

Abstract

In the past decade investigations have been carried out on the production of polysaccharides by Rhizobium, their isolation and structural determinations. From the preparations of exopolysaccharides (EPS), capsular polysaccharides (CPS) and cyclic ß-1, 2-glucans obtained, the variations in structures deviating from the basic structures, which have been proposed for the polysaccharides in each category, have been investigated. With a number of Rhizobium strains examples will be given of the polysaccharide production patterns under varying conditions of cultivation of the organisms and by making use of mutant strains showing altered production patterns.
