Abstract

PHA concentration was determined in 35 Spanish wetlands including deep, oligotrophic lakes, hypersaline ponds, coastal lagoons, high mountain lakes, karstic lakes and a variety of shallow ponds. PHA was found in all of them in concentrations between 0.05 and 5.0 mg/l. The PHA concentration was strongly correlated with total bacterial numbers. PHA was followed through a year cycle in Lake Cisó. Phototrophic bacteria reach large abundances in this lake and PHA concentration changed seasonally according to their biomass. PHA specific content was high during mixing and very low during stratification. Essentially no PHA reached the sediments through sedimentation, indicating that it was used by the phototrophic bacteria or decomposed by heterotrophic bacteria in the water column. PHA in planktonic systems is the consequence of several physiological and environmental factors acting together and its interpretation is, therefore, not straightforward.
