Abstract

The observation that a wide variety of bacteria make and store lipophilic inclusion bodies has been known for sixty-five years. That these polyester storage granules were made up of a vast array of polybetahydroxalkanoates that are biosynthetic, biocompatible, and biodegradable thermoplastics of great potential industrial interest is a concept that has burst upon us only in the last several years.
